Itinerary
Day 1: Playa del Carmen
We organize a transfer for you from the airport in Cancún to your Hotel Playa del Carmen by H-n-A.
Day 2: Playa del Carmen - Tulúm – Bacalar (approx. 270 km)
In the morning, you will pick up your rental car. You will start with a trip to Bacalar. We recommend, on your way, that you visit the Mayan site of Tulúm, which is situated on a cliff above the Caribbean Sea. In the afternoon, you will reach Bacalar with the “Lagoon of Seven Colors”, where the small museum in the Spanish fort is worth visiting. Accomodation at the Hotel Laguna Bacalar.
Day 3: Bacalar – Chicanná (approx. 135 km)
Today you will reach the so-called Rio Bec Region. There you can find the fascinating Mayan site of Kohunlich with its masks of gods. Other silent witnesses of a past civilization are the ancient Maya sites of Becan and Chicanná. Accommodation at Ecovillage Chicanná.
Day 4: Chicanná – Palenque (approx. 370 km)
Early in the morning you will drive to the Mayan site of Calakmul, hidden deep in the jungle, which once was a Great Power similar to Tikal. Climb the monumental main pyramid and you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view of the endless seemingly virgin forest. You’ll be amazed by the flora and fauna there. Afterwards, you will continue to Palenque via Escarcega. Accommodation at the hotel Villas Kin-Ha Palenque.
Day 5: Palenque
Today you will visit the mystic Mayan site of Palenque, which was hidden deep in the jungle for centuries. First of all, there is the unique tomb of the monarch Pakal, the Temple of Inscriptions with the massive sarcophagus. Also recommendable is a jungle walk passing other buildings and waterfalls, to the regional museum. Accommodation at the hotel Villas Kin-Ha Palenque.
Day 6: Palenque - San Cristóbal (approx. 215 km)
Today you will drive along winding roads into the mountainous area of Chiapas. It is worth stopping at the waterfalls Misol-Ha and Agua Azul. You’ll continue to the colonial town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, which is more than 2200 meters above sea level. Accommodation at the Hotel Casavieja.
Day 7: San Cristóbal
Before Before lunch you should take a short drive to the Tzotzil villages of San Juan Chamula. Well worth seeing is the church, where mystic Mayan rituals are still celebrated today. You can then enjoy a relaxing stroll in the afternoon around the historical center of San Cristóbal, with its baroque style churches, shaded Plazas and Indian markets. Accommodation at the Hotel Casavieja.
Day 8: San Cristóbal – Villahermosa (approx. 250 km)
Continue to the hot lowlands and to Chiapa de Corzo, a small town with a fascinating history. There you will find the giant canyon of Sumidero, with walls of up to 1000 meters high. With a little patience you could get to see sunbathing crocodiles on the river bank. You’ll continue through the picturesque mountains of Chiapas on the winding road leading to the capital of the state Tabasco, Villahermosa. Accommodation at Hotel Real de Lago.
Day 9: Villahermosa – Campeche (apprx. 420 km)
Make sure you allow time to visit the open-air museum La Venta, with its colossal stone-monuments of the Olmecs. Also within the park is the local zoo, where you can admire the symbolic animal of the Maya, the Jaguar. You will travel further to the Gulf of Mexico via Sabancuy to Campeche. In the late afternoon, it is strongly advisable to walk through the restored colonial center of Campeche, with its idyllic houses and watchtowers. Accommodation at the Hotel Plaza Campeche.
Day 10: Campeche – Mérida (approx. 175 km)
You will follow the so-called Ruta Puuc, where it is worth visiting the small but beautiful Mayan site of Labná, with its unique archway. Afterwards you will journey into the Mayan underworld and visit the impressive cave system of Loltún. Passing the typical Yucatecan town of Ticul, you will reach the outstanding Mayan site of the classical period: Uxmal. After the visit you will continue to Mérida. Accommodation at the Hotel Dolores Alba Mérida.
Day 11: Mérida – Chichén Itzá (approx. 121 km)
In In the morning you can take a city walk through Mérida where the attractions are gathered around the main square. See the elegant mansions along the Paseo Montejo to the Monumento de la Patria. In the afternoon you can visit the “City of three Cultures”, Izamal. It is worth climbing the pyramid of the firebird, which offers a marvelous view above “The Yellow City”. Afterwards, you’ll drive to Chichén Itzá where you can enjoy the Light and Sound show in the evening.

Day 12: Chichén Itzá – Playa del Carmen (approx. 250 km)
Today you can admire the biggest and most visited Mayan site, Chichén Itzá, with its famous Pyramid of Kukulkán. Other great buildings are the Temple of Warriors, the ball court and the observatory. Afterwards you will drive to Valladolid. Before reaching the city, a diversion to the stalactite cave Dzitnup would be worth visiting. Afterwards, you will continue to Playa del Carmen where you’ll drop off the rental car. Accommodation at the Hotel Playa del Carmen by H-n-A.
Day 13: Playa del Carmen
You should make the most of the day and relax. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airport or to another hotel at the Riviera Maya.
